A silly comment and reactions of “that’s so cute” inspired this sketch. Samanthia Stormdancer created by Kim Liu and used with permission.

Maggie Hogarth described the amusing idea of muses at a party discussing their creators, including thumbnail descriptions of what she thought various friends’ muses would look like. When asked what she thought mine looked like, she replied with a detailed paragraph-long description of Icara. It was love at first sight.

These model sheets gave the other players in the on-line role-playing MUCK an idea of what the earl, his livery, and the equipment carried by his troops looked like.

These teenage characters hit it off immediately and quickly became thick as thieves. Idle chatting with Yllanen’s player evolved into an impromptu paint fight that made a thorough mess of the kitchen in the cottage where Kestrel was staying. It ended up being an enjoyably hilarious scene to play out. Yllanen created by Kim Liu and used with permission.

AIDA came on stage in this on-line role-playing MUCK as a shipwrecked artificial intelligence. Eventually she fell in love and her consciousness ended up in a new humanoid body, winged, tailed, spotted, and filled with some real surprises.

After the conclusion of The Ace of Spades in Yarf!, Chris decided to drop the “furry alien” character designs in favor of more traditional space-opera-style alien designs. These sketches attempted to recast Crystaal and Allaina Noir using the new rules. Characters created by Chris Grant and used with permission.

“Flying Low” was inspired by Miyazaki’s Nausicäa and drawn for Gerald Perkins’ big black sketchbook. In turn it inspired the short story Sundance and a look at the main character at the time of the story and thirty years later, after retiring from air racing in the wake of a bad crash.

A common motif for fan creators is the cross-over between Star Trek and their own creations. This one would have explored the culture shock and conflicts of morality between the idealistic, Utopian Federation and the heavily biotech-influenced and frontier-pragmatic colony world of Avalon, as represented by one of its capital ships. Star Trek is the intellectual property of Paramount Studios.

Discussions with Chris explored the major characters’ family lives and resulted in a page of fun sketches. Pure whimsy inspired the casting of the three major female characters as the Fates of Greek mythology. Characters created by Chris Grant and used with permission.

Allaina’s personality is generally pretty sunny. Character created by Chris Grant and used with permission.

The colony world of Avalon specializes in bioengineering, including creating merfolk for mariculture and other marine work. Another odd product is a bioluminescent octopoid creature, which the uplifted dolphins, with their strange sense of humor, seem to enjoy wearing like baby bonnets—one of Wayne Shaw’s weirder ideas.

Erotic Artwork

After I made admiring comments about an art-show pin-up, the artist very kindly graced my sketchbook with a similar drawing of the same character. I, of course, had to reciprocate. Cirrusi created by Sarah Silverman (a. k. a. “Rummyhunny”) and used with permission.

Alysha Forrest and Laelkii Takara each dance for a very special audience of one—Matthew Brighthaven and Ashley Browning, respectively. These were thank-yous to Maggie Hogarth for her friendship and support. Characters created by M. C. A. Hogarth and used with permission.

Yes, I think Chester is sexy. He, of course, thinks chocolate is sexy—but then he thinks a lot of things are sexy. This gift for Terrie, sad to say, apparently disappeared, along with a bunch of more valuable art, in a burglary. Chester created by Terrie Smith and used with permission.

Changing from one seasonal wardrobe to the other is not unlike certain mammals changing their coats. Originally drawn in “Sky” Rigdon’s big black sketchbook.

This was drawn in Ed Garcia’s big black sketchbook after discussing a possible story collaboration with the lady on whom Katchana Dael was based: a bedroom farce in which Katchana, Crystaal’s superior officer, discovers the latter has something of a crush on her, which takes her aback. When one thing leads to another, they find their usual roles reversed. Characters created by Chris Grant and used with permission.

The threesome was a gift for Lia and Dean Graf, and stars their characters Mrrinn and Fargo. As a joke, they printed up a special copy of The Boudoir issue three with this piece in it. (Other work appeared legitimately elsewhere in the issue.) The foursome stars a male human, a rabbit buck, a vixen, and a tigress.

These were part of a portfolio of erotic art, A Touch of Fur, that sold reasonably well. The tigress and her two friends seemed to be the most popular of the ten plates, even with a good many female viewers. A lady friend theorized that a lot of women have that sort of fantasy, even if they don’t always admit it. An interesting historical note is that shading film was used extensively on the figures, since this was long before Photoshop existed.
